On Tuesday, May 2, at 4:47 p.m., Officer Salvatore Rando Jr. was flagged down by a boardwalk ambassador in reference to a male that appeared to be in distress. The male was seen going into the ocean at Hartford Avenue, Atlantic City police said.

Rando responded to the beach and found Darren Brathwaite in the surf in waist high water. Brathwaite appeared distraught and refused initial commands to exit the water, police said. The Atlantic City Fire Department water rescue team was activated.

With assistance from additional responding officers and EMS personnel, Brathwaite was persuaded to exit the water and walk to the shoreline where he was met by Officer Rebecca Seabrook and EMS personnel.

Brathwaite, 36, was transported by ambulance to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Division, for evaluation.

An investigation revealed that Brathwaite was involved in a domestic violence incident in Brooklyn, and was wanted for attempted murder. Brathwaite was ultimately taken into custody and charged with being a fugitive from justice.

Brathwaite was taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility where he was awaiting extradition.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the Atlantic City Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Section at 609-347-5766 or submit a text anonymously to tip411 (847411). Begin the text with ACPD.
